How To Improve Your Home’s Air Quality

Have you ever wondered about the air quality in your home? Probably not and you really should. Your home’s air quality can be worse than the air outside! And since it’s estimated that people spend about 90% of their time in their home, if the air quality is bad, then you and your family are in trouble. Having poor air quality in your home can really threaten your family’s health and cause unwanted problems and ailments. Here are some tips on how to improve the air quality in your home so that you breathe nothing but fresh air everyday:

Know The Deadly Air Pollutants

Having bad air at home is one thing, but having deadly air is something way worse. The three most dangerous air pollutants include carbon monoxide, secondhand smoke and radon gas. You should never smoke indoors and if you do, always smoke outside in an area where the air won’t reach your home. Also, make sure to have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. Radon is an invisible killer and the only way to know if you have it in your home is through a test.

Use Paints With Low VOCs

Certain paints release trace amounts of gases after their applied to your home’s walls, and these gases are called VOCs (volatile organic compounds). They can be highly toxic so make sure to use paints that are low-VOC and open windows and use fans when you paint.

Fix Leaks

Keep your home mold and mildew free by fixing any leaks since rain and humidity can allow moisture to get inside your home. Check your foundation, roof and basement at least once year for leaks.

Clean Air Conditioners

Keep the air quality fresh in your home by cleaning out your air conditioner regularly.

Ventilate

One of the best ways to improve the air at home is to ventilate it by leaving windows and doors open since normal daily household things (like washing, cooking and even breathing) actually produce water vapor and you don’t want those high moisture levels to create mold and mildew.
